September 8, 2023
Friends, I’ve been GEEKED for International Greeter Day since I spoke to a longtime volunteer last month. Usually reserved for tourists, the group is inviting Chicagons to explore several neighborhoods Saturday. Why do they all have to be at the same time? 😩 Scroll for more weekend plans 👇

What's CITY Talking About?
Inside Johnson’s New Plan to Shelter Migrants
The city has identified spots for “winterized base camps” with massive tents for asylum-seekers. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s proposed plan would move nearly 1,600 migrants from Chicago police stations to the camps. [Sun-Times]
- Neighbors have had mixed reactions to the city’s rollout of temporary shelters. [City Cast Chicago 🎧]
CTU President on Sending Son to Private School
Stacy Davis Gates defended her decision to send one of her kids to a Catholic high school on the South Side. The Chicago Teachers Union president said it was a “difficult” decision, but there are fewer options for high school students on the South and West sides. Critics called the decision hypocritical, given the CTU president’s previous statements on private and charter schools [WBEZ]

Who’s Tracking Response Times to 911 Calls?
The Chicago Police Department failed to track response times to half of 911 calls between 2017 and 2021, according to Inspector General Deborah Witzburg. The lack of data means it’s not possible to see how long it takes officers to respond to calls in Black and Latinx neighborhoods. [WTTW]
Inside Blackhawks' Newish Regime
Danny Wirtz is the new CEO and chair of the hockey team after his father Rocky died this summer. Now, the 46-year-old is tasked with rebuilding hope and trust in the organization after years of controversy. [City Cast Chicago 🎧]

Chicago Chatter

Hey Chicago got the dish on new CPS menu items, and readers shared the school lunches they remembered.
School Lunch
Risé S.: “Our cafeteria served chili and cinnamon rolls every Thursday. It was so popular that there was a booth where kids could invite adults to have lunch with them on a Thursday.”
Heleina C.: “My dad made me egg-and-ham sandwiches on days I knew I wouldn’t like the school lunch that day. … I think I only ate the hot dogs or burgers because they were the safest choice.”
Matthew P.: “Cheese pizza Fridays! As Catholics, we don't eat meat any Friday of the year, and I'm glad my public school had vegetarian meals.”
PSA
Eryan C.: The Inspired By You Fest is a new fest in Douglass Park Sunday. The proprietor of Muse Coffee Studio is putting on the fest and is sharing what has inspired him over the years.
