What's CITY Talking About?

Southwest Side Alder, Aide Assaulted Amid Protest

Ald. Julia Ramirez, 12th Ward, and her aide were attacked Thursday at a protest against city plans to put a tent encampment for migrants in a Brighton Park lot. The first-term alder said she is OK but her staffer was hospitalized in fair condition. [Block Club]

CPS High School Admissions Test Update

After technical problems last week, district students will take the high school admissions test Tuesday and Wednesday. Students taking the exam in another language will take it Nov. 1. And eighth graders not in the district can sign up Monday to take the test in the next couple weeks. [Chalkbeat]

This Week’s Must-Listen

I’m fascinated by the idea of human libraries, where you get to hear people’s life stories the way you would check out a book. Morton College in Cicero put on an event this week. [WBEZ]

We’ve been asking for your costume ideas, and you all had some good ones! As someone who procrastinates on costumes, I’m taking notes 📝

Rachael E.: “I'm Kim Possible and my best friend in Milwaukee is Shego!”

Erin V.: “I have jeans, shirts, a cowboy hat, and cowboy boots from a trip to Wyoming several years ago, so my cowgirl costume will be authentic.”

Dea B. A.: “I had, for a long time, wanted to be Axel Foley for Halloween so I was conflicted when Tom Hardy [from ‘Venom’] was wearing Axel Foley’s Mumford Phys. Ed. Dept. T-shirt and Detroit Lions letterman jacket from ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ I didn’t know if I was mad that he did it first …or flattered because we both idolized the same movie character icon. ”

Jenny J.: “Weird Barbie.”

Dawn A.: “Whatever I can afford at the last minute.”

Anna V.: “I like low-key, effortless costumes, so I bought a witch’s hat headband for $8 that I can add to whatever outfit I’m wearing.”

Jenny LeFlore, aka Mama Fresh: Chance the Snapper (yes, the alligator from Humboldt Park), the Bad News (Chicago) Bears, the State Street Preacher, and a Chicago–style hot dog accompanied by a Portillo’s worker.
