🚨 Did cops lie about fatal traffic stop?

April 12, 2024

Good morning! It’s City Cast editor (and deep-dish pizza denier) Adrian González filling in for Sidney Madden today.

I’d hate to start the day with a pie-based argument, so here’s some interesting news: If you’re going out this weekend, you can now call a taxi through the Uber app.

What's CITY Talking About?

Bear-ing the Tax Burden

The Chicago Bears have filed a property tax appeal seeking a $7.2 million refund for the Arlington International Racecourse, where they initially planned a $2 billion stadium. Despite shifting focus to a new lakefront stadium proposal to replace Soldier Field, negotiations with suburban school districts over property tax payments have stalled, with both sides blaming the other. Questions Raised Over Fatal Traffic Stop

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is questioning the circumstances of the fatal traffic stop in Humboldt Park, where officers killed motorist Dexter Reed. Body camera footage showed officers firing approximately 96 shots in just 41 seconds after Reed allegedly shot one of them in the hand. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office is also investigating. [🎧 City Cast Chicago]

Electric Scooters After Midnight?

A City Council committee advanced an ordinance that would allow Chicagoans to rent electric scooters after midnight. The adjustment would eliminate existing time constraints and could generate over $3 million in licensing fees for the city. [WGN]

This Week’s Must-Read

In honor of the 40th Chicago Latino Film Festival kicking off yesterday, here’s a preview of the 85 movies from around Latin America hitting the big screen. I recommend “Erase Una Vez En El Caribe,” a samurai-meets-campesinos thriller from Puerto Rico. It’s playing tonight and Sunday. [Block Club]

We asked about your biggest public transit pet peeves. Host Jacoby Cochran and producer Michelle Navarro talked all about the unwritten rules of riding the CTA. Here are some of your biggest CTA complaints:

Courtney: “When people don’t go to the back of the bus or middle of train cars during rush hour. Also, when they do that and still have their backpacks on. Taking off backpacks frees up so much more space!”

Adèle-Marie B.: “Don’t leave your belongings on one of the few empty seats on a busy train. (I will be the person to ask you to move it.)”

Jose C.: “Not getting out of the way, like with their headphones on… not paying attention to people when they [are] trying to get out on their stop.”

Josselyn: “Sometimes when I’m on the bus, people will block out the other seat, so they’ll sit on the outer seat, so no one gets the other one.”

And of course, the number one thing we got the most responses about — trains or buses not being on time:

Amanda B: “I’ve been taking public transportation my entire life, and I would say the timing of some of these schedules for buses and trains [are] horrible.”

Alicia M: “Post rush hour, the bus comes every thirty minutes to an hour/hour-and-a-half.”

We got a lot of responses on X when we asked to share your CTA complaints, unwritten rules, and dreams. Check out the thread.

Did Cops Lie About Fatal Traffic Stop? Plus, New Obama Center Ruling

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability recently unveiled footage and 911 calls related to the police shooting and killing of Dexter Reed during a traffic stop in March. Invisible Institute’s Maira Khwaja and Crain's Chicago reporter Corli Jay join us to delve into the fallout and COPA’s scrutiny of officers’ accounts of what led to the traffic stop.

Deep dish discourse aside, I’m really excited for the new Jack and Coke ice cream floats at Guaranteed Rate Field. Catch me napping up in the third deck. 😎
