👀 The Chicago grocer you all hate
May 3, 2024 · Adrian González
Hello! It’s City Cast editor Adrian González here to spend Friday with you and remind you that it’s time to settle into the month of May.

What's CITY Talking About?

Amtrak’s New Route
The rail company announced the Borealis rail service, a state-sponsored daily route between Chicago and St. Paul, Minnesota. Borealis trains include café cars with regional food items and — more importantly — no middle seats. One-way coach fares start at $41. [Amtrak]

Chicago Hospitals Score Mixed Safety Ratings
A recent biannual hospital safety report by healthcare watchdog group Leapfrog gave eight Chicago area hospitals a “D” rating based on more than 30 metrics. Seven Chicago hospitals moved up in the rankings, including Ascension Saint Joseph, which received a “B” grade. [NBC Chicago]
Arrest Made in Police Officer Slaying
Chicago Police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the April 21 killing of officer Luis Huesca. Huesca was fatally shot during a carjacking while returning home from work. [Sun-Times]
This Week’s Must-See
In an inspiring display of resilience and community, fifteen newly-arrived migrant couples, predominantly from Venezuela, tied the knot during a ceremony at Park Community Church. The brides pulled together makeup, there were recycled centerpieces, and the party went on for quite some time. [WBEZ]

Chicago Chatter

Some Chicagoans are still reeling from the sudden closure of Foxtrot and Dom’s Kitchen & Market, which got us thinking: Are chain grocery stores the only option in Chicago? We asked Hey Chicago readers to chime in on their favorite grocery spots, and here’s what we heard.
Lisa D. shared why they love Mariano’s: “The BAR! It's my favorite bar, and just happens to have a grocery store attached to it.”
Sarah W. is an Aldi OG: “I’ve been going to Aldi for 25 years, long before it was cool. I can get the majority of my basics at still-affordable prices. Although prices have gone up even for them. They also have easy parking.“
Hannah S. is definitely going to miss Foxtrot: “I love the couches and tables — it was such a great gathering spot for my friends to hang out and not be expected to spend money.”

🔥 But not all of the feedback was positive.
Ruth R. was not a Foxtrot fan, and they didn’t hold back: ”FOXTROT LOL GIRL BYEEEEE. Also, GoGrocer panders to the rich and wannabe rich and should be dissolved.”
M.H. was one of several respondents who had a bone to pick with Jewel: “The scavenger hunt approach to sale items is aggravating and manipulative. There appears to be a regular price, price with your “phone number,” and the price with your digital coupon & log in.”
Debora Z. had a different reason for disliking Jewel: “It always looks dirty and messy.”
