Chatter: The Pedway vs. Lower Wacker

The Pedway
The Pedway is a pedestrian underground tunnel that Hey Chicago readers and City Cast Chicago listeners feel more confident navigating. (Aaron Volkening / Flickr)

After we talked about the city’s underground network of tunnels on the City Cast Chicago podcast, we polled readers and listeners on where they would rather get lost: the Pedway or Lower Wacker. More than 75% of you said you’d rather get lost on the Pedway.

The Pedway Preference

Ted H.: “I can pull out my phone to get oriented without being in danger of causing a car crash. On Lower Wacker, I have to keep going until I come out.”

Mary V.: “People are around to give directions.”

Clau M.: “Lower Wacker is spooky as hell. In the winter you are not only lost, but cold.”

Sean H.: “There’s a gym, a pool, city hall, a department store, and trains on the Pedway! Who wouldn't want to get lost there?”

Jon S.: “At least you’re not flying at 50 mph.”

Team Lower Wacker

Colin B.: “I've been driving it for years to find the cheapest parking lots downtown. I can handle Lower Wacker Drive really well. No need for a GPS with no signal down there anymore for me.”

Andi F.: “I’d be in my car and would feel safer.”

KT: “There is more fresh air.”

Knowing how to navigate the Pedway or Lower Wacker could help save you from upcoming holiday traffic 😅

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m grateful to all of you for reading, listening, writing in, and becoming members. You make this job fun and rewarding ♥️ OK enough of that sappy stuff — enjoy your turkey dinner!
