🦢 Farewell, sweet Humboldt Park swan boats

May 9, 2025 · — Emmi Mack

Hey Chicago! By now you’ve heard the new pope is from here, although rumor has it he was mainly raised in the burbs. Rumor also had it he was a South Side Cubs fan, but that myth’s been busted.

⚾️ Interestingly, the pope’s brother told WGN they came from a split household: mom liked the Cubs and dad liked the Cardinals. With this breaking story settled, let’s move onto bigger news, like memes and swan boats.

Humboldt Park Swan Boats, You Will be Missed

A beloved staple of the Humboldt Park lagoon, the swan boats are not returning for another season. California-based Wheel Fun Rentals has ceased operations at the park. The swan boats have floated there since 2018, delighting parkgoers. [Block Club]

Johnson's Green Social Housing Plan Approved

This Week’s Must-Read

There’s a new courtroom artist on the scene in Chicago: Cliff Questel of Albany Park. The longtime graphic designer is subbing in for the city’s go-to freelance sketch artists, both of whom are gearing up to retire from a fading trade. Questel may soon sketch his own daughter (and my roommate) Rose, who graduates from Chicago-Kent College of Law this month. Congrats Rose! 🌹[Chicago magazine]

Some Greasy-Fingered Pope Memes

Within minutes of hearing the next pope was from Chicago, my phone (and Slack) was flooded with memes. A lot of them, unsurprisingly, had to do with food. Here are some of our favorites. Don’t worry, deep-dish and tavern-style are both accounted for.

I’d be remiss not to point out a slight error in yesterday’s newsletter: the Neighbor shoutout to Longmont Dairy. The company is actually based in Denver, under the purview of our sister publication, City Cast Denver. Looks like Oberweiss is still our main bottled milk option.

🥛 Anyhow, show Denver some love and know that I’m bringing you an extra shoutout next Wednesday.
