😭 More expensive Ubers in Chicago?

June 12, 2025 · — Emmi Mack

Ahoy Chicago! If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. If you teach him how to fish in Chicago, he’ll eat once a month because that’s how often you can safely ingest bass caught in our waterways.

Still, fishing is (kind of) fun. And with Father’s Day coming up, we thought we’d share some good spots to cast a line.

👇 But first, there’s uber Uber drama to unpack.

What Chicago's Talking About

It’s Uber vs. the City

City Council is considering whether to raise required pay for ride-share drivers and establish a $7 minimum payout per trip. Uber is urging users to call their alders and oppose measure, saying it could increase fares by 40%. Meanwhile, Uber wants Chicago to pay back $1.8 million. The money, paid to the city, came from congestion fees erroneously charged by Uber that need to be refunded to riders. [Tribune 🔒, Block Club]

3 Possible Paths Forward for CTA — 1 is Very Bad

The Chicago Transit Authority’s acting president is warning about a “severe and sobering” possibility for the agency. Either state lawmakers will administer roughly $1.5 billion to Chicago-area transit for 2026; lawmakers will only address the upcoming $770 million fiscal cliff; or there is no additional state funding, resulting in extreme service cuts. One more shoutout from City Cast Chicago listener Cassie in Avondale:

“Loved the episode on cash-only spots around the city. I would add O's Tap in Logan/Bucktown to the list. The owner Jim is a solid, local guy — he's built up the spot to offer unique craft beer, karaoke/live music, and even a koi pond bar in the back (you gotta see that one, for sure). And the Old Stye sign welcomes you, of course. Highly recommend!”

🍺 Thanks for the rec, Cassie. I will definitely be stopping by with at least a twenty in my pocket.
