City Cast Chicago

✊ Big ICE protest this weekend

June 13, 2025 · — Emmi Mack

Hey Chicago … The CTA is still in trouble. We’ve discussed it on the podcast. We’ve discussed it here in the newsletter. We’re truly at a crossroads. (Weary pun intended.)

But reader Eddie L. reminds us: You can call and email your state reps and Gov. JP Pritzker about this. Luckily, Better Streets Chicago has a form that makes it easy!

Continued ICE Raids, Protests, and Other Big News

The city is prepping for more raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and more protests. Meanwhile, CTA leadership continues to sound the alarm on potential service cuts. Pritzker Testifies Before Congress

Gov. JB Pritzker defended the state’s immigration policies in Washington Thursday. Lawmakers questioned him about the details of providing health insurance to undocumented people. He was also asked if he’s ever used a women’s bathroom. (“Not that I can recall,” Pritzker said.) [Sun-Times]

Terrible News About the Dolphin

Earlier this week, we were excited to report that a new baby dolphin was born at Brookfield Zoo. Sadly, the calf did not make it. Despite round-the-clock monitoring and reaching early milestones, he died suddenly Wednesday night. The zoo now awaits necropsy results. [WTTW]

This Week’s Must-Read

Even though it may look like the city is cutting down healthy trees, the ones getting the ax are likely dead or diseased despite appearances. In fact, Chicago is on a mission to grow its tree canopy. Less affluent neighborhoods have long had less tree coverage, in part because the city would only plant trees when neighbors call and ask for them. That’s slowly changing. [WBEZ]

One more plug. Taqueria El Asadero was already highlighted in our recent podcast episode on cash-only spots, but I just want to emphasize that rec in writing. I’ve been going to this place since I was a teenager terrorizing Welles Park, and it’s as good as ever. Last night’s steak torta hit 🤌
