The Senate spent Monday deliberating President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill. The measure includes $1.2 trillion in social safety cuts. Should it pass, more than 500,000 Illinoisans would lose their health coverage while about 427,000 could lose their food assistance. [Sun-Times]

CPS Laid Off 161 Employees. Are More Cuts Coming?

Chicago Public Schools laid off 161 employees last week as it grapples with a $734 million deficit. The layoffs included many crossing guards, district office employees, and a handful teachers union employees. Additionally, more than 200 vacant positions won’t be filled. [Chalkbeat]

Who is the Douglass Park Lifeguard Who Shot Two Teens?

A 55-year-old Chicago Park District lifeguard, Charles Leto, has been charged with shooting two teens, killing one. The other, a cousin of Laquan McDonald, was injured. The lifeguard approached and quarreled with the teens, apparently over his bike, and is claiming self-defense. A judge has ordered the lifeguard be held until trial. [CBS]
