More Than 1,400 Teachers, School Staff Laid Off

With declining enrollment and a budget hole, Chicago Public Schools laid off 1,458 staff members Friday in the summer’s second round of layoffs. Special education assistants were hit especially hard, but CPS says most impacted staff will likely be able to take jobs at other schools in the district. [WBEZ]

Dolton Buys Pope Leo’s Childhood Home

The village bought the house for $375,000 with plans to turn it into a historical site open to the public. Village officials had originally considered using eminent domain to get ownership of the property but were able to come to a deal with the homeowner. [WGN]

While construction crews were digging up Lincoln Avenue, they discovered a piece of Chicago transit history — a set of streetcar tracks that may date back to 1895. Before the CTA was created in 1945, the Lincoln Square area was served by electric streetcars until the service was bankrupted by corruption and overregulation. [Block Club]
