Hey Chicago! Is it hot in here?

🥵 My window units are working harder than ever in what’s shaping up to be a historically sweaty summer. (Ugh, the humidity …) On today’s podcast, we’re talking weather, specifically extreme heat, plus a little politics. Basically a classic Chicago convo.

What Chicago's Talking About

Mayor vs. Inspector General: A History

In what’s basically a “You can’t fire me. I quit” scenario, Inspector General Deborah Witzburg says she won’t seek a second term. But clashes with the mayor are part and parcel for the watchdog position, which former Mayor Richard M. Daley established in 1989. Since then, the city has had four IGs with Witzburg adding a two-term limit. [Sun-Times]

A Closer Look at Chicago's Spike in ICE Arrests

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained notably more people in Chicago since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, with arrests peaking on June 4. Of the 88 immigrants booked that day, 75% had no logged criminal record. And that’s a broader trend. ICE has detained nine times as many immigrants without criminal pasts since Trump took office this year. [Tribune 🔒]

Montrose Bait Shop Celebrates 90 Years

This summer marks Park Bait’s 90th in business. The little bait shop at Montrose Harbor first opened in 1935, shortly after the Montrose Point sanctuary was built, and remains a beloved outpost for anglers and beachgoers alike. Today, it’s run by Stacey Greene, who inherited the shop from her father. [Block Club]

How Well Do You Know the CTA?

The Green Line.

After years of construction along the North Side branch, all Red Line stops are back in operation. The renovated Bryn Mawr, Berwyn, Argyle, and Lawrence stations officially opened Sunday with a commemorative “first ride.”

It’s a bit of happy news for “L” riders, as the Chicago Transit Authority faces a looming fiscal cliff. The Illinois General Assembly recently adjourned its spring session without addressing those budget gaps, which could ultimately lead to a 40% service reduction.

But maybe you knew all that. Maybe you’re a CTA expert. Take the quiz and find out!

What To Do

With the demolition of the Damen Silos well underway, I’d like to eulogize those graffiti-smothered slabs one more time. Growing up on the North Side, the silos were the ultimate destination: a clandestine cove, a landmark with no tourists. The view of the city from the very top was, to me, worth every rusty ladder rung … but maybe the next generation of Chicago kids will be a little safer 😉
