🌞 How to make the most of August in Chicago
July 31, 2025 · — Emmi Mack
Hey Chicago! Summer is far from over. (Thank God.) There’s still more festivals, more restaurants to try, more park hangs, more parties … Today’s podcast gets into all of it: your official guide to August. We also discuss some more serious news stories to follow throughout the month.

What Chicago's Talking About
Why Are the Pritzkers Obsessed With Quantum?
Although quantum computing is still considered somewhat obscure, Gov. JB Pritzker and his sister Penny Pritzker, the former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, continue to push to make Chicago a hub for the future industry. Pritzker regrets Chicago’s missing out on the original internet boom and feels strongly that quantum is “on the verge.” [Wall Street Journal]

Serious Flooding on Southwest Side Prompts Call For FEMA
After heavy rainfall left thousands of Chicagoans with flooded basements and other damage, local officials are calling on Pritzker to get federal assistance. Midway, Gage Park, Brighton Park, West Lawn, Ashburn, and Garfield Ridge are all affected. [Block Club]
Northwestern Cuts More Than 400 Positions
Northwestern University is cutting more than 400 jobs — about 5% of its staff — amid serious budget gaps. (Almost half the eliminated roles were already vacant.) The news comes as the school considers striking a deal with President Donald Trump to resolve investigations over alleged antisemitism. [Fox 32]
