What's CITY Talking About?

Federal Agents March Downtown

Led by U.S. Border Control commander Gregory Bovino, dozens of federal agents in military gear marched Sunday through downtown and Gold Coast. Bovino told a WBEZ reporter they were arresting people based on "how they look." The patrol comes after federal officers again fired rubber pellets into crowds of protesters in Broadview Friday and Saturday. [Sun-TImes]

Podcast Player: "Whose Property Taxes Are Going Up This Year in Chicago?"

It’s Time to Get Mad About Property Taxes. Again.

While Chicago property tax bills are delayed, we do have a sense of who’ll likely see the biggest tax hikes. The Tribune’s A.D. Quig and the Illinois Answers Project’s Alex Nitkin break that down on today’s podcast — plus skyrocketing assessments on the South and West sides. [City Cast Chicago 🎧]

City Council Returns With a Bang

City Council returned from summer recess with a big agenda — and a lot got done. Nepo baby Walter “Red” Burnett was confirmed as 27th Ward alder.

Here’s what else passed:

  • The granny flat ordinance — with caveats
  • The Chicago Fire's massive South Loop stadium plan
  • A $90 million settlement compensating Ronald Watts victims
  • Additional provisions over affordable housing near the Obama Center [ABC 7]

Also, at one point: Eight officials stuffed into a copy machine closet. [Axios]
