What's CITY Talking About
Rep. Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia Won’t Seek Reelection
Garcia’s decision means there will be five open congressional seats and a Senate race on the March 17 primary ballot. Garcia originally filed to run for another term in the 4th Congressional District, but he is expected to step aside as his chief of staff also filed to run for the seat. Critics say Garcia is attempting to handpick his replacement. [Sun-Times]
Attorneys Describe Inhumane Conditions At ICE Facility
At a Tuesday hearing, lawyers for people detained in Broadview asked for a restraining order against the government which would prohibit allegedly substandard living conditions and increase access to counsel. They compared the facility to a “black site” with little food, lacking hygiene products, and dirty, overcrowded cells. The Justice Department claims the restraining order would “effectively halt”immigration enforcement in Illinois. [Tribune 🔒]
Psych! No More Transit Fare Hikes
Following the passage of a $1.5 billion funding bill, the Regional Transportation Authority is walking back required 2026 fare hikes at CTA, Metra, and Pace. The RTA board will meet Thursday to talk more about the transit bill. [Sun-Times]
