Durbin and Duckworth Split on Ending Shutdown
Eight Democrat senators sided with Republicans Sunday to advance compromise legislation that would end the government shutdown. Among them, Sen. Dick Durbin. Durbin said “This bill is not perfect, but it takes important steps to reduce their shutdown’s hurt,” adding it would fully fund SNAP. Illinois’ other senator Tammi Duckworth disagreed, saying the bill does nothing to prevent rising health care costs. [WTTW]
1-Year-Old Pepper Sprayed by Feds in Cicero
Federal agents sprayed chemical irritants from a moving vehicle at cars leaving a Sam’s Club in Cicero Saturday, hitting a baby girl. The incident was captured on video and appears to violate a court restriction on use of force. [Sun-Times]
Meet One Of CPS’ CEO Finalists
Meisha Ross Porter, who previously led New York City Public Schools, is interviewing to become Chicago Public Schools’ next CEO. Alex Marrero of Denver Public Schools was previously reported as another finalist but said he didn’t plan to leave Denver. Current interim CEO Macquline King is not in the running. [Chalkbeat]
