February 19, 2026 · — Emmi Mack

Happy Lunar New Year! I know it officially kicked off Tuesday, but the celebration continues all month long. Lincoln Park Zoo is also getting in on the fun, welcoming a new red panda. And he’s adorable.

Other zoning projects also moved ahead. [Block Club]

Many Detained Immigrants Struggle Without Consulate Support

Consulates have the power to conduct welfare checks on immigrants stuck in detention, but support across consulates is not equal. One Filipina green card holder struggled to get medical help through that consulate. The Venezuelan consulate closed in 2019. Meanwhile, 68,000 immigrants remain in ICE custody. [Borderless]

Here’s Who Pritzker Wants to Tax

Gov. JB Pritzker's $56 billion state budget proposal includes taxes on social media companies, similar to what Mayor Brandon Johnson recently got passed in Chicago. Under Pritzker’s plan, additional funds would come from taxing casinos and new corporate income taxes. He didn’t mention a potential millionaire surcharge tax. [Sun-Times]
