Housing Authority Sued Over Derelict Homes

Mismanagement by the Chicago Housing Authority left houses vacant and vulnerable to crime and drug trafficking, disproportionately in Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, according to a new lawsuit. One neighbor teamed up with a housing nonprofit to take on CHA in court. They’re seeking widespread fixes to bring hundreds of housing authority properties back into livable condition. [Block Club]

University Ends Partnership To Recruit PhD Students of Color

The University of Chicago is one of 31 universities that stopped partnering with the PhD Project, an organization that works to diversify the pool of students seeking postgraduate degrees. Although the university didn’t say why it cut ties, the move comes following allegations from the Trump administration that the program racially discriminates against white students. [Sun-Times]

Supreme Court Sides with Local Toy Companies on Tariffs

The Supreme Court struck down tariffs implemented by the Trump administration — a win for Illinois-based sister toy companies Learning Resources and hand2mind, which were among the first to sue. Those and other importers could now be entitled to refunds from the tariffs, though that path remains unclear. [Reuters]
