🎨 A jazzy, witchy, artsy day trip
July 16, 2026 · — Emmi Mack
Day trip idea! I recently took a Coach bus to see this Gertrude Abercrombie retrospective at the Milwaukee Museum of Art. Known as a “jazz witch” and an all-out “Queen of Chicago,” Abercrombie painted while living in Hyde Park and partying with bebop musicians throughout the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. Her pieces are surreal, Midwestern, and, yes, totally witchy.

Side note: When purchasing a bus ticket, double-check to make sure it’s not leaving from O’Hare’s highly inaccessible multi-modal facility 🫠. Better yet, stick to Amtrak.

What's CITY Talking About

Alders to Question ‘ICE on Notice’
During the height of Midway Blitz, Mayor Brandon Johnson issued an executive order directing Chicago police to investigate federal agents. But it’s unclear what the order accomplished. As immigration arrests pick up, City Council will question the decree at a hearing Friday. [Sun-Times]

What’s a Small Business Bill of Rights?
The nonbinding resolution proposed by Ald. Desmon Yancy (5th) aims to reduce red tape — limiting fines, streamlining permits, and allowing more time for compliance with new policies. Some changes require ordinances, but others can be done by city departments. [Block Club]
What’s Next for Ford City? Plus, the Battle Over Harold’s
Chicago leaders are exploring what could replace Ford City Mall after it closed for good in June. On today’s podcast, we have our own suggestions. Plus, we discuss the battle to control the Harold’s Chicken brand and Chicago foods that deserve their own food fest. [City Cast Chicago 🎧]
Peoples Gas Slashes Proposed Rate Hike
The utility is now asking for a $144 million increase, down from $202 million earlier this year. For consumers, that would still mean monthly bills that are $7-8 higher starting next year. People’s Gas attributed the revision to lower and deferred costs in its ongoing pipeline replacement program. The final rate hike still needs to be approved by state regulators. [Tribune 🔒]
