City Cast Chicago
🍿 Storefront theaters and underground cinemas
September 18, 2026 · — Emmi Mack
ICYMI Chicago, today is Simone Alicea’s last as executive producer of City Cast Chicago. Simone shared more on Tuesday’s podcast episode. It’s been “such a privilege to be able to spend eight hours a day learning” about Chicago, she said.
Meanwhile, we’ve learned the most from her. Behind the scenes, I’ll miss Simone’s sharp news judgment and (at times, stone-cold) edits. But I, along with my co-creative producer Michelle Navarro and our other Chicago colleagues, wish her the best of luck in her next role — also at City Cast, though not on our local team.
Hopefully, she’ll visit us on the podcast soon 💙💙💙

What's CITY Talking About
Zillow’s Listing Limbo
First, Zillow filed an antitrust suit against Midwest Real Estate Data and the massive brokerage Compass. In response, MRED yanked all listings from Zillow, though a judge temporarily restored access. Now, however, the judge has dissolved that order in a win for MRED and Compass, ordering Zillow to engage in arbitration. [Tribune 🔒]
Belmont Cragin Surpasses Little Village as Largest Latino Neighborhood
Belmont Cragin is now home to nearly 58,000 Latinos — more than any other Chicago neighborhood. That number outpaces Little Village by about 2,000 people. A new study also shows Latino Chicagoans are moving beyond historically Latino neighborhoods. [Block Club]

Chicago Battles Food Insecurity. Plus, Storefront Plays
This year, grocery stores have closed on the South and West sides; SNAP benefits were stripped from tens of thousands of households; and food prices continue to rise. On today’s podcast, we discuss how all this is increasing food insecurity in Chicago. Also: must-see fall theater. [City Cast Chicago 🎧]
Some Future for West Suburban and Weiss?
Weiss Memorial Hospital in Uptown shuttered its emergency room last year, and West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park closed in March — now Insight Health Systems is taking over both safety-net hospitals. However, there are many requirements to fulfill before anything is reopened. [CBS]
