What's CITY Talking About

Sox and Cubs Both Start Playoff Runs Tonight
Both of Chicago’s beloved baseball teams kick off their Wild Card Series tonight – both on the road and both broadcast exclusively on Peacock & NBC Sports Network. The Sox play the Houston Astros at 4 p.m. CT while the Cubs face the San Diego Padres at 9 p.m. CT. [MLB]
D-Day for Renters Protection Ordinances
Despite vowing last week to spend more time hammering out a compromise between two conflicting renters rights proposals, Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th) appears poised to call a vote on both ordinances at today’s special City Council meeting. At issue are enforcement mechanisms, what information could be collected for a new rental registry, and how much landlords would have to pay to register. [WBEZ]
CPD Brass Agrees with 180 Day Suspension
Chicago police leaders and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability agreed three officers and a sergeant should be suspended a combined 180 days over what COPA called a pattern of unprofessional, undocumented traffic stops of Black Chicagoans. The stops took place in Lincoln Park, West Town, Old Town, River North, Streeterville, Gold Coast, and parts of Logan Square between July and October of 2024. [WTTW]
Your Right to Records. Plus, Block Club's ICE Lawsuit
It took Block Club Chicago’s investigative reporter Mick Dumke 11 months to get one page of records from ICE about the clash between its agents and protestors outside of the Broadview detention center last year. The response had no records or reports of arrests or use of force. On today’s podcast, we discuss why Block Club filed lawsuits against the federal government multiple times. [City Cast Chicago 🎧]
Tactical Urbanism Worked
The city plans to replace two resident-built benches at bus stops with new benches up to municipal code. Earlier this month, the Northwest Side Alliance put out the benches without city permission. The group plans to continue installing benches at empty bus stops. [Sun-Times]

Some good news: This former vaudeville theater-turned-church in Humboldt Park is now being transformed into a movie theater and community hub. It’s the kind of news that sounds like a win-win for nearby residents, environmentalists, and preservationists alike, and we can’t wait to check it out.
